Slingerland is especially helpful for students with Learning Differences
-
Originally developed as a teaching method for dealing with specific language difficulties, Slingerland has gained national recognition as a highly beneficial approach to language for students of all levels and abilities. Slingerland employs visual, aural and kinesthetic modalities to focus on reading, oral and written language?using the student’s areas of strength to support areas of weakness.
By integrating the Slingerland Approach into the KMS classrooms, all students receive an enhanced learning experience, while specific help is provided for the dyslexic population thus preventing their misplacement in special education or falling through the cracks of a conventional classroom.

From single letters, students are taught how to associate sounds with their visual counterparts and blend those letters to spell words. They add suffixes and prefixes, and write phrases, sentences, paragraphs and themes. They are also taught the phonetic rules and generalizations of the English language. Rather than a weekly spelling list, children work with a dictation paragraph that allows practice with punctuation, capitalization, and language mechanics, as well as spelling. Through this carefully guided approach, they learn the structure of the English language and its functional use while developing confidence in their own abilities to use that language effectively.?
